Four swine flu cases presumed at VCU

Since the fall semester began, VCU has had four possible cases of the H1N1 influenza virus in addition to the four cases reported during the summer. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the H1N1 virus is the only strain of influenza in circulation at this time.
"If a patient tests positive for influenza, A, the health department recommends assuming its H1N1 since the majority this spring and summer were H1N1," said Dr. Margaret Roberson, the director of University Student Health Services.
According to Roberson, only patients who require hospitalization will be tested for H1N1.
The regular flu season will not begin until later this fall.
Three of the students went home and one stayed in their dormitory, according to Pam Lepley, the director of VCU Communications and Public Relations. The latest case was diagnosed over the weekend.
The Centers for Disease Control has identified universities and colleges as "points of spread" for the H1N1 virus. On Aug. 25, the National Geographic Web site cited the World Health Organization as estimating that one out of every three people will be infected by the H1N1 virus before the pandemic runs its course.
H1N1 symptoms intclude fever, chills, runny nose, body aches, headaches, fatigue, cough or sore throat, diarrhea and vomiting.
Students are at a higher risk than the general population for such contagious illnesses because they travel often and attend many social activities, according to the Virginia Department of Health Web site. The provost of VCU issued an e-mail alert on Aug. 26 to students and faculty detailing symptoms and recommended precautions.
The CDC is recommending students, faculty and staff with flu-like symptoms stay in their homes, dormitories or residence halls for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever or signs of fever.
"We have to wait to determine the prevalence and severity of the cases," Roberson said. "It's too soon to say yet."

Awesome Amelia, we are really hoping not to get the swine flu at Minico. I have dicussed this with the school nurse and we will have to pull Jennifer out of school until 7 days after the last student recovers. Because her immune system is so weak. She could be out for a while. Jennifer hopes it doesn't come to that. So are we.
